In various areas around the United States, floods have been a growing concern among government and non-government organizations. Due to the severe climate changes the world is experiencing, heavy rains have become more rampant and typhoons and hurricanes have become pressing realities for citizens as well. Hence, various organizations and communities have been trying to come up with precautionary measures to help people prepare and be ready for these natural calamities. Although these joint efforts are making slow progress, the only way success can be achieved at a mass scale is if every individual pitches in and follows the necessary precautionary measures.

Awareness and initiative

When it comes to natural calamities that can lead to destructive effects such as floods, fire and property damage, the first thing you should do is be aware of the weather conditions around your area. For states that experience heavy rainfall and are prone to hurricanes, you have to always be on the lookout for weather predictions and warning signs. As for those who aren’t in harm’s way, you should make an effort to help those people who have been affected by flood damage situations.

There are various support groups and organizations out there that can help educate you on what to expect from sudden downpours and hurricane safety tips. Be sure to inform every single person in your household about the dangers of floods and storms. Since these natural calamities can often occur without enough warning, the best thing to do is to be prepared ahead of time. Your primary concern should be the safety of your family members or whoever is living with you in your house. If you already notice your neighbors rushing to the evacuation shelters and safety zones, do not even try to salvage your belongings. The most sensible thing to do would be to get everyone in your house to safety immediately.

Flood-proofing your homes

If floods often occur in your vicinity, precautionary measures can be taken to protect your house from incurring severe flood damage. One thing you could do is to invest on a heavy-duty sump pump that can help lower the rising water that enters your house. There are actually some heavy duty sump pumps that can automatically detect flood water and immediately switches on, pumping out water out of your house. Another thing you could do is strategically place drains around the ground floor of your house so when the flood water comes rushing in, the water will be drained immediately.  And lastly, you could arrange the furniture in your house in such a way that they won’t get damaged easily. You can do this by placing jars on elevated stools that are water-proof or putting your antiques on high cabinets, far from the floor.

Another suggestion that could be helpful would be to make your flooring into tiles so that it will be easier to clean. Avoid having carpets around your floor and opt to use water-proof material for your fabrics. When it comes to facing flood situations, the best thing to do is to adapt to the situation instead of trying to fight it. Also, it would be highly advisable to elevate the electrical sockets around your house instead of typically placing them near the floor area. By doing this, you will avoid electrical grounds or circuit problems. Moreover, always make sure that you do not leave electronic gadgets or appliances lying on the floor. These will pose as hazards if a flood occurs inside your house because they may still be releasing electric currents.

Extreme precautionary measures

Although these may sound drastic and over the top, there are certain areas around the United States that experience such massive floods that two-storey houses become totally submerged under water. These have happened in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina devastated a lot of neighborhoods. With this in mind, if you are planning to build a house in areas highly prone to floods, it might help to build a third floor that could serve as your emergency area in the event flood waters rise to an extreme level. By doing this, you will be able to keep the people in your house safe and dry.

Another thing you could do is invest in a motor boat that could fit the number of people in your residence. This could save you and your family from harm’s way if a severe typhoon or hurricane hits and flood waters come raging in. Although this may be an expensive investment, it will still be worth it in the end because you won’t have to worry about waiting to be rescued. Moreover, have an emergency stock of radios, signal flares, flash lights, a first aid kit and food set aside so you can survive the ordeal of a severe flood.

Sending a clear message to the youth

Although adults may firmly grasp the severity of floods and their effects on homes and the lives of people, the young ones may still not realize the seriousness of these kinds of situations. That is why it is so important to expose the youth to these gripping realities. Classes should be taught on the history of floods and the devastating effects they have had on millions of people and homes. They need to know the significance of acting vigilantly and being alert at all times most especially if they are living in areas that are threatened by dangerous typhoons and hurricanes.

Students in elementary and high school should be taught not only to be proactive in terms of preparing for floods but they should also have the necessary know-how to be able to react quickly to sudden calamities. Having the youth prepared and ready to handle these kinds of situations will make a huge difference in terms of lessening injuries and calamities. The youth have to be aware that when they are in a highly stressful situation and have to face the forces of nature, they have to compose themselves and remain calm at all times. They should not let panic control them.

They should automatically think of emergency exit points wherever they are and should look for a safe place to go. And most importantly, if they are in a place with kids younger than them, they should make a conscious effort to help out and bring them to safety as well. In times of crisis, generosity and teamwork are the key elements to survival. You cannot afford to be impulsive and selfish. Your primary concern is your health and safety. However, if you are fully capable of helping other people, you should do what you can to help them to safety as well.

Community effectiveness in times of crisis

The best way to overcome a crisis that involves flood damage situations is to get everyone in your community to unite and seek out solutions to overcome the problems. This can be done by having regular meetings and brainstorming sessions to come up with realistic plans that can be implemented when a flash flood actually occurs. Moreover, the essential tasks need to be delegated accordingly to each individual and one should take the role seriously and should never be complacent. Each member of the community should be vigilant at all times.

Another helpful way a community can prepare for a flood is to have team building seminars that actually simulate high-risk situations. This will help people be more aware of the things they have to do when they are facing dangerous elements. Also, by doing this, they will recognize their weaknesses and strengths and what they need to improve on as well. From here, strategies can be developed so that an effective system can be implemented which will serve as a standard protocol for all community members.

Bottom line is that communities need to be able to form close-ties and have a relationship with one another so that indifference doesn’t lead to dysfunctional meetings and discussions. The only way a community can rise above natural disasters is by working together as a team and helping each other find productive ways to overcome the situation. Community leaders should not approach the members in an authoritarian manner and should instead, be willing to hear out the opinions of the community members. Even if the community leaders may feel like they need to show a strong ruling in order to maintain order and discipline, they need to practice restraint and empathize with their fellow community members.

On the other hand, the community members should show respect to the leaders who have plans to help them find a solution to flood damage problems. They need to be able to put their heads together and find common ground so success can be achieved. After all, when it comes to facing natural disasters, they will still all be in the same scenario. Hence, they should always communicate effectively and be open to all suggestions. By doing this, they will be able to find a concrete way of overcoming a flood damage crisis.
